8 Weeks Before Move Day
- Inventory every room - photos work great for insurance and quotes
- Decide DIY vs. professional movers (call (816) 301-4235 for a free KC quote)
- Research moving companies - check Google ratings, licensing, insurance
- Get 2-3 written quotes from licensed Kansas City movers
- Set a moving budget (truck, movers, supplies, deposits)
- Create a moving binder (digital or paper) for receipts, contracts, dates
- Notify landlord if renting (lease termination usually 30-60 days notice)
6 Weeks Before
- Book your Kansas City moving company - peak dates fill 4-8 weeks out
- Reserve elevator at old/new building if applicable
- Request COI (Certificate of Insurance) from your mover for buildings that require it
- Order moving supplies - boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers (or ask Little Fellas)
- Start using up frozen food, pantry items, cleaning supplies
- Begin decluttering - what stays, what donates, what goes to junk removal
- Schedule donation pickups (Goodwill, AMVETS, local KC charities)
4 Weeks Before
- Submit USPS change of address (usps.com/move - takes 10 minutes)
- Notify your bank, credit cards, employer, and subscriptions of new address
- Update insurance policies (auto, renters, homeowners) with new address
- Transfer/establish utilities at new home (gas, electric, water, internet)
- Schedule shut-off date at old home and turn-on at new home
- If moving long-distance from KC, confirm timeline and delivery window with mover
- Start packing non-essentials (out-of-season clothes, books, decorations)
- Label each box: room destination, contents summary, fragile if needed
2 Weeks Before
- Confirm move date and arrival time with your moving company
- Confirm payment method with mover (we accept card, debit, Zelle, cash)
- Pack everything except essentials and a "first-week" bag
- Empty, defrost, and clean refrigerator and freezer (48 hours before)
- Disassemble furniture you can - we handle the rest
- Pick up dry cleaning, return library books, fill prescriptions
- Transfer or set up bank accounts if changing banks
- Get cash for tips - $20-40 per mover for great service is standard in KC
1 Week Before
- Finish packing all non-essential boxes
- Pack an "open first" box: paper towels, soap, toilet paper, snacks, basic tools
- Pack an essentials bag per person: 2 days of clothes, toiletries, phone chargers, meds
- Take down curtains, wall art, mirrors - leave them in their rooms for movers
- Drain gas/oil from lawn equipment if moving them
- Check route from old to new - parking, building rules, low branches, narrow streets
- Walk through old home one more time to catch overlooked items
Move Day
- Be ready and showered before the crew arrives - clock starts at arrival
- Walk the crew through, explain any especially fragile or high-priority items
- Keep ID, payment method, phone, keys, and essentials bag with you (not in the truck)
- Stay accessible by phone during the move - quick questions save time
- Do a final walk-through with the crew before they leave the old home
- Take final meter readings at old home
- Tip the crew when they finish - $20-40 per mover for great service
- At new home, direct each box to its room and unwrap furniture they re-assemble
First Week in New Home
- Unpack kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom essentials first
- Test all utilities work, locate water shut-off and circuit breakers
- Change locks or get new house keys made
- Register vehicles if you moved counties or states
- Update driver license address (Missouri: 30 days, Kansas: 10 days)
- Find a new doctor, dentist, vet, and pediatrician if needed
- Meet at least one neighbor - they know more about the area than Google
- Leave a Google review for your KC mover if they did a great job
